Stretching for the Stiff
According to Google Dictionary, stiff means:
not easily bent or changed in shape; rigid.
severe or strong.
Informal noun examples: a dead body; a boring conventional person
We don’t know about you, but these don’t sound very pleasant! Now let’s apply this to our body. We sure don’t want to be stiff as a “dead body.” Not only is it uncomfortable not being able to move freely, but it can also be debilitating, slow us down, and prevent us from easily doing day to day things. Being stiff can also apply to our personalities, how our mind works, and even how we are spiritually. It’s difficult to learn, grow, and adapt to our ever changing world, situations, people, and ourselves as we age if we remain stiff in all senses of the word.
The opposite of stiff is being flexible, pliant, supple, and bendable. But to be properly flexible, we also have to be strong and versatile so that too much flexibility doesn’t weaken us. There’s a balancing act.
Stretching for the stiff means you are not just stretching and strengthening your physical body, but expanding your comfort zone little by little by doing something new, taking a yoga class which may push your body and mind to move stagnant energy, and to stretch your limits by putting yourself out there and just showing up for yourself in new ways. And the more you stretch, that stiffness will be a thing of the past.
We hope you start and continue to break the mold!
